WASHINGTON DC HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Halloween is approaching quickly. Parents should prepare their children for a safe and enjoyable trick or treating even. Below are some safety tips to help make this fun holiday a memorable event.

Tips for Everyone

  • Walk on the sidewalk and not in the street.
  • Cross the street only at street corners and look both ways before crossing.
  • Do not hide or cross the street between parked cars.
  • Obey traffic signals.
  • Carry a flash light if trick or treating at night.
  • Keep away from open fires and candles. (Many jack'o'laterns will be lit with candles).
  • Visit only homes that have porch or outside lights on.
  • Stay away from and do not touch pets you do not know.
  • Accept treats only at the door. Never go into a stranger's house.
  • Wear reflective tape on clothing.
  • Make sure costumes do not drag on the ground. You do not want to trip.
  • Do not wear a mask while walking. You do not want to have your eyes covered. Consider using face paint instead of a mask.
  • Go only to neighborhoods you are familiar with.
  • Have a grown up inspect all candy before you eat it. Do not eat candy that is not wrapped or if already opened.

Tips for Parents

  • Young children of any age should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Children should wear watches that can be read in the dark
  • Your child's costume should be made with flame-retardant material.
  • Older children should know where to reach parents.
  • Older children should know when to be home.
  • Parents should know where their child is going.
  • Inspect all candy before any thing is eaten. Toss out anything unwrapped or looks suspicious.

Tips for Homeowners

  • Turn on porch or outside light so trick or treaters will know you are home.
  • Make sure the yard and pathways to your house are clear of items that people can trip on.
  • Use a battery operated jack o'latern or place a flash light in your jack o'latern.
  • If using candles inyour jack o'latern, place them in a place were trick or treaters will be walking or standing.
  • Make sure any paper or cloth decorations are away from lit candles.
  • Pets can get frightened on Halloween. Put pets in a safe place there they can not get hurt or hurt a trick or treater accidentally.
