Community Info & Resource Center: Takoma Park
Takoma Park, DC & MD was just a railroad stop on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, in the late 19th century. It was a Victorian suburb, called just "Takoma Park", at that time. New Yorker, B.F. Gilbert purchased the thickly wooded, hilly and wild land that had many springs running through it in 1883. This suburb, like suburbs all around America, grew due to railroad accessibility to downtown city areas. With the development of railway stops, large numbers of people were able to leave cities to find more space, peace and quiet, and a more amenable and healthy environment to raise families. Takoma Park has a high elevation (350 feet). This height helped avoid Malaria and mosquitoes. The drinking water was also very clean because of Sligo Creek.
The first homes in Takoma Park were large, stately homes built on spacious parcels of land. It was hard to visit the first residents of Takoma Park. Takoma Park is 6 miles from downtown DC. This was considered quite a distance, at the time. The electric street car changed everything. Many more people were able to shop and visit Takoma Park, due to the electric street car. Visitors noticed the advantages of living in this quiet community. Smaller homes on smaller lots were built.
Today, Takoma Park DC and MD is a thriving, active community. An eclectic mix of people of different ages, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds live here. This community can also boast about its many writer, artist and musician residents. When visiting Takoma Park, you can not help but notice the small town atmosphere. The active downtown area has many thriving small shops and local businesses. The community is also united through its many active organizations. The Takoma Horticultural Club was formed in 1916 to help promote community beautification. The Horticultural Club is still very active today. Two other active organizations are the Citizens Association of Takoma Park, DC and the Community League of Takoma Park, MD.
Takoma Park is an official "Tree City, USA" and is also known as Azalea City. The town is a nuclear free zone and supports historic preservation. Takoma Park has an award winning recycling program. If you are a resident of this community, but not yet a citizen of the United States, you can still vote in local elections and hold a local elective office. You can visit Takoma Park by taking the metro (red line).
