Shepherd Park's history as a community started in 1868 when Alexander "Boss" Shepherd built his summer mansion on the corner of Geranium and 13th Streets, NW. It was just a rural neighborhood at the time. Homes and subsequently, the neighborhood, grew around this grand Victorian structure. The mansion was given the name "Bleak House" after the Dickens novel. In 1916, the house was torn down.
When you drive through the Shepherd Park neighborhood, you can not help but notice that the streets are named after flowers, trees and other plants. "Boss"Shepherd was a botany enthusiast and owned a nursery in Washington DC. Wild flowers from his nursery still grow and thrive in the yards of many residents around the city. "Boss" Shepherd is also given credit for modernizing DC by laying curbs, paving streets, installing sewers and planting 60,000 trees.
Shepherd Park is located at the northern point of Washington, DC, conveniently located close to Rock Creek Park and downtown Silver Spring, MD. Eastern Avenue divides Shepherd Park from the boarder of Silver Spring. Walter Reed Hospital is to the South of the Shepard Park boarder, Georgia Avenue, NW is to the East and 16th Street, NW is the western boarder. Residents in this neighborhood have the convenience and advantage of using 2 nearby metro stops. The Silver Spring Maryland metro and Takoma Park Washington DC metro stops (both red line) are close by.
There is a home style for every one in this neighborhood. You can find colonials, bungalows, farmhouses, split levels, Tudors, and ramblers among the many tree lined streets.
Shepherd Park is known for its civic mindedness. It has an active Citizens Association called "The Shepherd Park Citizens Association". Neighbors, local businesses and friends of Shepherd Park are members. The Citizens Association sponsors many community activities such as community picnics, auctions, and flea markets. There is also an active on line community list serv.
Neighbors, Incorporated is another Shepherd Park citizens group. This organization was started in the 1950's by a group of African American and white neighbors who banned together to fight unfair housing practices and promote integration.
